Research & Development

Through our continuous innovation efforts and the development of new and advanced technologies, Alstom leads the power generation market.

> REINFORCING OUR  RENEWABLE ENERGY PORTFOLIO
Through a licensing cooperation agreement, Alstom is ready to enter the Ocean energy market and plans to commercialise its first tidal stream products by 2012.
Alstom is also developing its geothermal line. It is built on the group’s proven solutions such as steam turbines, generators, pumps and control systems.

> IMPROVING THERMAL POWER PLANT PERFORMANCE
Significant improvements in performance and cost-effectiveness could be achieved by applying new technical solutions to existing plant elements. For example, material research has led to the construction of turbine blades from a large coated single crystal to enhance performance and minimise corrosion.
Similarly, advanced engineering simulation systems, such as thermal modelling, have greatly improved the life of mechanical components in steam turbines and increased the power output.

>  IMPROVING THERMAL POWER PLANT EFFICIENCY
Alstom’s technical expertise helps to significantly improve the efficiency of power plants.
Today we offer advanced, high efficiency supercritical boilers operating at steam parameters of 600/620°C and 275 bar. Current technology development will lead to our prototype ultra-supercritical (USC) plant operating at 700°C at 350 bar.
Our turbine technology guarantees high efficiency for power plants, even in combined cycle power plants operating at part-load.

> REDUCING ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT
Overall efficiency improvements help to reduce CO2 emissions, while specific technologies minimise the emission of specific pollutants. For example, flue gas desulphurisation technology can capture as much as 98% of sulphur dioxide emissions from conventional suspension-fired boilers.
Alstom has launched a significant R&D effort aimed at developing innovative and retrofitable CO2 Capture and Storage solutions (CCS). More than 8 pilot projects and demonstration plants are under operation or construction.
