Combating climate change is truly a global issue and one that all sectors of government, industry and the community at large must address.

However with 40% of CO2 emissions coming from the power generation sector, and with global energy demand expected to double by 2030, the power industry must take a leadership position and play a key role in significantly reducing its emissions.

Alstom’s commitment to providing solutions to meet this challenge is a long standing one. We believe that there is no single solution and that it will take a range of approaches.

1. Technology mix focus for the reduction of CO2 emissions
With the most comprehensive and balanced portfolio of generation equipment in the market, including  the removal of traditional pollutants, Alstom is well positioned to assist plant operators apply the most appropriate technology mix to meet their market conditions.

2. Production efficiency and energy management
Today, Alstom is working toward innovations that aim to achieve the goal of 50% plant efficiency for steam plants and 60% for combined cycle gas fired plant - a significant improvement in comparison to technologies available today.

3. Application of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) technologies
With fossil fuels accounting for 60% of power generation by 2030, the third approach to address the climate change challenge is the application of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) technologies. Alstom is currently focussing on to two main categories of CCS, Oxy Combustion and Post Combustion Capture. These technologies can be retrofitted to the installed base - an essential component to meeting future emission targets.
